Remember that amazing white leather vest with the studded silver lapel from our Resort 2013 Collection? Naturally, girls in fashion often find themselves wanting next season’s looks right now, so we really couldn’t wait until Resort hits the racks to wear it. (Can you blame us?) So we took matters into our own hands and whipped up a DIY collar inspired by this must-have vest. With some silver faux leather from M&J Trimming and a minimalistic metal closure, we created this silver collar that adds instant cool to any top. Follow our instructions below to make your own!
1. Gather your supplies. You’ll need scissors, a needle, silver thread, a metal closure, and 1 1/2 ft silver faux leather trim.
2. Trim your silver trim into a long trapezoid for your collar. You may want to use a real collared shirt as a template, or simply wrap the trim around your neck and eyeball it. Angle the edges a bit – our trim was 16 inches long at the top, and 17 inches long at the bottom.
3. Thread your needle with the silver thread and tie a knot at the bottom of the thread. Place one end of the metal closure over the top corner of the silver trim, and begin sewing around it to hold it in place. Once it’s secure, tie the thread in a knot in the back and snip the ends.
4. Repeat Step 3 by sewing the other side of the metal closure to the other side of the collar.
5. You’re all done! Simply unclip the metal closure to put the collar on.

We can’t get enough of the neon trend. Actually, we can’t get enough of the lace trend either! So we decided to combine our two favorites into one awesome DIY. With a simple pair of thrift store oxfords and supplies from our go-to craft store M&J Trimming, we created these perfect-for-fall lace and neon kicks. The lace adds a girly touch, while the neon keeps it fresh and trendy. Follow our instructions below to make them yourself!
Supplies:
- neon studs
- scissors
- 2 yards lace trim
- Unique Stitch glue
- E6000 glue
- 2 yards neon cord
- plain oxfords
1. Remove the laces from your oxfords. You’re going to glue the lace on the shoe in sections, so cut a piece of lace that will roughly cover one section of the shoe. Follow the basic oxford outlines to create the sections. Liberally apply Unique Stitch glue to the first section, then place your lace on top.
2. Use your scissors to trim the lace into the desired shape. It should follow the basic lines of the shoe – this is the easiest way to create each section.
3. Continue to cover the shoe with sections of lace until the entire shoe is covered. Let dry.
4. Pull your neon cord through the holes to create laces.
5. Begin adding your neon studs wherever desired. Simply place a drop of E6000 glue on the shoe, then place the stud on top. Continue to do this for each stud. We chose to follow the natural lines of the shoe, but you could put your studs anywhere you like.
6. Finish studding the shoe – then you’re all done! Let it dry and you’re ready to show off your new kicks.

Over here at RM, we are clearly addicted to lovely ladylike accessories. When we found this gorgeous lace over at M&J Trimming, we knew it had endless DIY possibilities, so we used it to create an adorable vintage-inspired collar. And we’re loving the end result- it’s the perfect accessory to throw on over a summer dress for a sweet, vintage look. Follow along below to make your own!
Supplies:
- 2 ft lace
- 2 ft silk white ribbon
- white thread
- needle
- scissors
1. Cut the lace into 2 pieces, each one about 8 inches long. Make sure you trim the ends so it won’t fray.
2. Using your needle and thread, sew together the top corners of the two pieces of lace. This will be the front of the collar.
3. Cut the white ribbon into two pieces. Fold about 1/2 inch of one ribbon over itself on the end to make it more sturdy, then sew it to one of the top corners at the back of the collar. Do the same with the other ribbon.
4. Now you’re all done! Simply place the collar in front of your neck, then tie the ribbons together in the back to hold in place.
