Holiday gifts can be a tall order. Whether they are for a friend, a lover, or something in between, it takes a certain finesse to get them right. If you’re tired of giving the same pajamas-fragrance-scarf cadence, we have the perfect idea for you: records. They simultaneously serve as sweet apartment artwork, a visceral serenade, and an emblem of vintage cool. And the best part is that the hunt can be half the fun. There’s nothing quite like the rhythmic flip through record bins on a lazy Saturday. Paintings, photography, fashion and stellar fonts pass with each flick of the wrist. We scoured the East Village for the most noteworthy musical haunts, each with a different personality. Here are our top picks below. (P.S. – Stay tuned for our holiday gift guide on RebeccaMinkoff.com–coming soon!)

Academy Records: A laid-back vibe, well-stocked 2 for $5 bins, rare live vinyls and new favorites. We love the psychedelic Kiss poster on the wall.

415 E. 12th St., New York, NY 10009, nr. 1st Ave.

A-1 Records: Remember the John Cusack music-junkie fav/romance High Fidelity circa 2000? (If not, put it on your list of must-sees.) Well, A-1 is the EV version of Cusack’s movie record shop. Run by guys who are walking music libraries, they specialize in soul, funk and hip-hop.

439 E. 6th St., New York, NY 10009, nr. Ave. A

Gimme Gimme Records: Your old-school, hole-in-the wall, dusty vintage vinyl shop for cheap finds. It’s only open on weekends.

325 E. 5th St., New York, NY, 10003, bt. 1st Ave. and 2nd Ave.

Good Records NYC: Don’t let the hot pink façade fool you, this collector’s haven boasts dark hardwood floors, quiet from the street noise, and a park bench indoors for perusing music mags.

218 E. 5th St., New York, NY 10003, bt. 2nd Ave. and Cooper Sq.

Turntable Lab: The selection of sound equipment is certainly for spinmaster nerds. But if adjusting loops, queuing capabilities, and effects nobs mean nothing to you, check out top shelf items like the Kanye and Jay Z gold embossed deluxe double picture version of “Watch the Throne.”

120 E. 7th St., New York, NY 10009, bt. 1st Ave. and Ave. A

On Tuesday, November 27, fashion’s (and footwear’s) finest gathered at the Museum of Modern Art for the 2012 Footwear News Achievement Awards where Rebecca Minkoff was awarded Marketer of the Year. Presenting the award were two-thirds of the funny fashion trio (known for their sporadic spoof videos), blogger Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller and model Hilary Rhoda. Embracing Rebecca’s trademark “shoetography” – her style of Instagraming her shoes from the waist down for which she has become known to do on a (almost) daily basis – Hilary and Leandra took the footwear photography into their own hands from the stage, playfully highlighting the brand’s social media ritual.

“I’m always so happy to support Becky because she’s one of the first brands that turned to social media. She forged this relationship with her followers and made them feel like they’re her best friends,” said Medine. “When I first met her, I sort of assumed we were going to be friends because in my head we already were.” (WWD)

We simply cannot choose whose style we salivate over more of this musical duo – Adam or Binki? It’s a sartorial toss-up! Adam’s penchant for flare will make you ditch the skinnies and seriously re-evaluate your stance on the bell-bottomed jean. Binki is the reigning queen of effortless 70’s style, with accessorizing skills that are not to be messed with.

The unlikely two have veered from their previous projects – Adam with the quirky snark of the Moldy Peaches and Binki with the California cool threesome Little Joy – to concoct an intimately enchanting new album that rings of late 60s folk pop. Their self-titled album will be released on January 29, 2013, but three songs have been released to hold us over until then. Our favorite, “Here I Am,” froths ethereal melodies wreathed with heartfelt, metaphoric renderings of love lost. The song is a bittersweet ode to romantic reflections of both song-writers.

Adam and Binki played their first-ever show together recently at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan – and we wanted to put them in our pocket. Their rapport is endearing and adorable in a way that lets the audience into their inside jokes and banterful ways. When they laughed, we laughed.

Here is a vignette from the duo on their newly released single “Here I Am” and two other newly released tracks. Listen to “Here I Am” below.

While tweed is recognized as a go-to style for cold-weather fashion, Rebecca updates the wear-with-all winter fabric this season with her downtown twist, giving it just the right balance of elegance and edge. Through her signature bodycon and cropped silhouettes, Rebecca introduces a selection of holiday pieces in the ladylike fabric featuring her trademark detailing: black, navy and metallic gold stripes, gold zipper trims and flirty cut-outs, adding a hint of playfulness without revealing too much.
This fall, we had the fun opportunity to take a ride around Williamsburg with blogger duo, Lauren and Micol, of The Marcy Stop. A personal fashion blog on the rise, their style is a reflection of their Brooklyn stomping grounds: an eclectic mix of old and new, always with a pinch of that artistic flair synonymous with the borough’s creative vibe. Below, the blogger team reveals their favorite places in the ‘hood and their take on holiday dressing. Make note: Sequins are a girl’s best friend!

(Want to shop the video? Check out the boutique here!)

If you had to create a Williamsburg cheat sheet, which of your favorite places would make the cut?

The Whiskey: Our favorite Sunday sports bar where you can compete at shuffle board while cheering on your favorite sports team and taking down a few picklebacks.

Maison Premiere: They have a great $1 Oyster happy hour but if you can’t get in during the special it’s still worth a visit for the amazing cocktails and ambiance.

La Esquina: Yes, Brooklyn has one too! And there’s a spacious backyard with festive Christmas lights and heaters that’s perfect for after work drinks.

Samurai Mama: Killer Japanese food in an awesome setting.

Night of Joy: The best place to put on your dancing shoes…

Beacon’s Closet: We could get lost for hours in this vintage store. Weekdays are the best days to go, but even on weekends braving the crowds will be well worth your time.

What we love most about Williamsburg…

Lauren: Riding my bike around without (as much) fear that I’m going to get hit by a car, the amazing restaurants and bars that are all within a five-block radius from me (including Pies n’ Thighs, Traif, Dram, Post Office, and Marlow + Sons), and being only a subway stop from Manhattan, even though it feels like a world away at times.

Micol: Honestly I love that so many of my friends are close by! And, if you keep away from the touristy section on Bedford that there is a very real neighborhood feel to it. When I leave my job in the city to come home it really feels like coming home. And, I don’t know anywhere in Manhattan where I could have as big a backyard as I do!

You have an all-girl bike gang called the Southside Heartbreakers – during the winter months, do you take a hiatus from the gang or do you bundle up and power through the cold?

Sadly the gang is on hold during winter. If it’s a mild day, we’ll bundle up and brave the cold, but typically we don’t resume our biking adventures until spring.

You’re wearing a lot of fun metallics and sequins in this video. What are your tips for rocking these looks from day to night?

For day, we love dressing down bold sequins and metallics by layering up with more casual wardrobe items. Tossing on a chunky sweater, beanie or scarf always works well, or pair ‘em with ripped up denim, some beaten up moto boots, and a vintage army jacket for an effortless day look.

For cocktail hour, we love pairing sequins with a standout coat and contrasting fabrics like leather, lace, and tweed. A great clutch and sky-high pair of heels never hurts either!

What’s your go-to look for the holiday season?

Micol: Lately I’m all about over the top, whether it’s wearing several chunky rings and bracelets AND necklaces or pairing statement earrings with crazy, curly hair (my hair is generally straight so this one takes awhile). Sartorially speaking, I can’t get enough of leather, either as an accent on a jacket or as a skirt or dress.

Lauren: When it comes to holiday makeup, I’m all about a bold lip. Paired with a subtle, brown smoky eye, rosy cheeks and mile-long lashes, you can’t go wrong! As for an outfit, it really depends on the occasion. For a night out on the town I’m all about leather, like Micol. For more formal events, a fun cocktail dress in a deep jewel tone will do. I also hope to experiment more with my hair this holiday season by way of braids and messy up-dos.

What are the top five things on your holiday wish lists?

Lauren: A new iPhone, the perfect cocktail dress, like the gold sequin Wednesday Dress, a new wallet, and a pair of flat, black riding boots like the Rogan Boot.

Micol: A vintage 70s winter coat (channeling Ali Macgraw in Love Story), the Pave Round Horn Pendant – I’m always in the market for a new chunky necklace I can layer with my current collection or wear on it’s own, Heath Ceramic Dinnerware (I love hosting dinner parties), a new Matt Schwartz (She Hit Pause Studios) print, and these rad Rebecca Minkoff Dante Boots I’ve been eyeing for a while now.

How will you be spending the holidays?

We’ll both be spending time with our families, but after the Christmas holiday we’re meeting up along with 14 of our friends to ring in the New Year in a cabin we rented in the Catskills. As much as we love New York, sometimes a weekend getaway is seriously underrated (and much-needed)!

With the frosty bite of winter comes an innate longing for warmth and all things cozy. Our new Pinterest board, Warming the Wolfpack, is an ode to just that: A visual feast of soul-warming hot chocolate and other wintery drinks, thicker than thick knee socks and uber-soft sweaters, frolics in the snow and inviting living rooms that function as a haven for loafing of all kinds, from burrowing into your favorite book to watching classic holiday flicks.

Think of “Warming the Wolfpack” as your virtual winter wonderland. Enjoy – and stay warm!
